Section 13 – Best Job Search Strategies
Connecting Your Past to
Your Future
Getting the job you want is a matter of connecting your past to your future. If the
links between then and now are not clear to a potential employer, you must make
them so. If your experiences do not match what the employer has asked for, then
point out how your experience will work for this position and be specific.
Once you get started working, choose your experiences carefully to learn what you
need to get to where you are going. Volunteer for assignments, request transfers, fill
in for a co-worker in the job you want while he/she is on vacation, go to school at
night, or join a community action group! Take on these “extras” with a purpose: To
get the experience you need for the next successful move up the career ladder you
are building for yourself!
List your most important marketable skills as they relate to the position you want.
