Where People Work
Hint:
Many small businesses do not even have a Human Resources
Department. Candidates should be targeting the highest ranking
person, often the owner!

Why Traditional Methods Are Often Obsolete
Many people complete preschool, elementary school, and junior high school
and, in many cases, graduate from high school. At that point in time, we have a
decision to make. We either enter the working world or we decide to continue
our education through vocational school (where we learn a specific trade or
craft), community college, four-year university and possibly graduate school.
Incredibly, the skills of determining interest and then self-promotion (marketing
oneself) are often not prioritized throughout the educational process.
The vast majority of career seekers feel unprepared to get any job, much less
seek a career calling. They create a resume, post their accomplishments on
multiple job boards, and hope for the best. You may find yourself frustrated when
you learn that less than 5% of all mass-mailed resume postings result in
employment. The “hit” rate for internet-based job boards is just as dismal.
To improve my knowledge of how hiring authorities think and operate, I serve as
a Director for one of the chapters of the Society for Human Resources
Management (SHRM). This experience has given me tremendous insight into the
challenges faced by folks whose job it is to seek and procure talent. You may be
surprised to hear that hiring authorities are frustrated with the lack of initiative
and creativity exhibited by most candidates and constantly challenged by their
company to become the “employer of choice.”
