Take a good hard look at yourself. Be your own worst critic. Look past the things you

can’t change within a day or so, like weight or other physical characteristics.

Finger Nails.

If you are a female, how long are your nails? “Saturday Night Nails”

may look great at a party, but will they give a different impression to a potential

employer when you say that you are a hard worker?

Jewelry.

An easy rule of thumb regarding jewelry (and this is true for a male or

female) is that it should not be the focus of attention. That means one ring on

each hand, with the exception of a wedding and engagement band. One

earring in each ear is surely acceptable, but no more, and earrings should be

discreet. Facial jewelry of any kind is taboo, because it is distracting.

Clothing.

How about your choice of clothing? For men, a tie dresses up any

attire, and shows professionalism, regardless of what sort of employment you

are seeking. Both men and women must keep in mind the message that

clothing sends. If your clothes are baggy, you will appear to be slouching,

which sends a message of laziness. If colors are too bright, your attire will take

center stage and your message will be lost. Very short skirts are unacceptable

for interviews, as well as, when working, as are very tight or low cut clothing.

Denim, in any form, is not to be worn. For women, wearing pantyhose and heels

is essential. Neutral colors don’t need to be boring. An interesting scarf can

spice up a gray suit and white shirt or blouse.

Take a few minutes to put together a “mock wardrobe.” What would you need?

What can you do to acquire the items that you will need?
