Page Background

Many career seekers are terrified by the prospect of interviewing. The

key to mastering anything new is preparation and familiarizing yourself

with what will occur. Regarding the interview, this means reviewing the

proper procedures. So, what are the most frequently asked questions in a

typical interview session?

1. Tell me about yourself…

In the majority of interviews, the

first

question is

“Tell me about yourself.”

This question is what I call a “convince me” question.

Begin the answer by expressing your interest and desire to contribute

to the employer. Offer to share your credentials and your prior research.

In your answer, you have

three

basic options:

1. To discuss your personal background

2. To discuss your educational accomplishments

3. To discuss your professional experience or work history

Begin with the most impressive and relevant aspect of your credentials. By

doing so, you will establish an all-important first impression! If you choose,

for example, work history, express your interest and desire to work for the

employer and demonstrate your knowledge of their operations. Share how

this contribution is your calling! State that you are a hard worker, that you

come in early, are often the last to leave, and are looking to do more than

just the bare minimum required for the position. Tie in your previous experience

to the position. If you do not have a strong work history, focus on your

education. The key is to tie your strength to the position you are

interviewing for.
