The more you want something and feel like it is out of reach, the more
frustrated you will become.
• Find a mentor, tutor, or instructor that can help you master the skills you
need to complete the work on your own later.
• Be patient! If you learn to wait for your desired outcome before
quitting the task at hand, you will be amazed at how often you
achieve your goal.
Self-Downing
– Have you ever looked at a project and thought, “There is no
way I can do this, I am not smart enough, I do not have the skills required to
complete this task.” When you continually minimize your own skills and
abilities and express doubt about your ability to succeed, this is known as
Self-Downing. A person that has already made up their mind about their
inability to do something tends to disbelieve even when they have
accomplished the task! They may pass off the achievement as “dumb
luck.” It can also be difficult to accept compliments from a boss or
classmate that praise your work. Deflecting praise is an example of false
modesty.
After long periods of self-downing, you may start to develop limiting beliefs
about your level of achievement and success. You may also start
procrastinating because you have developed a fear of success and will
subconsciously seek ways to underperform.
Is there a solution? YES:
• When an instructor or manager compliments your work, practice
accepting the compliment by simply saying “thank you.”
• Fear of success can be deeply rooted in several factors. Try to
determine where your fear of success comes from. Did significant
people in your life, like a parent or sibling often criticize your
accomplishments? Were you taught to minimize your successes? What
is it about achieving your goals that is scary? Do you fear
judgment
from peers if you outperform your classmates? Are you concerned
that
important relationships could be compromised if you are
successful?
• Remember to compliment and praise yourself for work accomplished.
