Five Stages of the Interview

First Impression—Stage 1

Building Rapport (5–10 Minutes)

Usually this dialogue is “small talk” on the traffic, weather, local sports team,

current events. This stage is designed to put both parties at ease. Remember,

first impressions are extremely important!

Track Record—Stage 2

Question And Answer Session (20–30 Minutes)

Usually, the interviewer will ask 10–15 questions, which can be either open or

closed ended. This stage is designed to determine your ability to handle the job

and your future potential. Prepare for this stage by reviewing all possible

questions and by practicing your responses. Remember to “prove it” and support

your answers with documented examples.

Career Goals—Stage 3

Your Questions (10–20 Minutes)

Here is your chance to obtain any information not already covered. Remember,

some employers state that it is the questions you ask and not your answers

that provide best insight to your true potential. Prepare 3–5 questions for this

stage.

Company Match—Stage 4

Evaluation (5–10 Minutes)

Does the position further your career calling? Can you see yourself working with

this employer? Do you think they are excited about you working for them?

Summary—Stage 5

The Close (5–10 Minutes)

Use this stage to review your credentials, restate your interest and, ask for the

position! One suggestion is to ask the interviewer, “How do we proceed?”
