My Fears

Taking initiative requires a number of qualities. In order to take initiative

you need to be willing to take a risk. The risk may be an emotional risk

because a co-worker or supervisor may not like your suggestion. A

suggestion for improving procedures, may require your co-workers to learn

new ways of doing things. This may not be met with great enthusiasm

because some people may not want to change.

Taking initiative is not always popular. Standing out in the crowd is not

always comfortable. However, taking initiative is required if you are going

to be a leader. Leaders who accept a challenge and are willing to take

risks do not always please everyone.

Taking initiative may initially result in failure. For example, you are learning

to operate a new machine or computer and you hit the wrong button

and lose the work that you spent hours creating. You may feel like a failure

but you need to remember your goals. Learn from your mistakes and try

again.
