Take a look at the picture of the Manhattan Bridge in New York City. Notice how the

bridge appears to be the same size as the buildings?

In reality, the bridge is at least three times larger than the buildings. What is this an

example of?

If you guessed

size constancy

, give yourself a pat on the back!

Our perception of the size of objects changes based on our distance from the object.

But that is just the beginning!

You can also learn how others see the world

and make decisions, which will be helpful in understanding difficult tasks

or important situations that require effective solutions.

Shape constancy

allows us to understand objects from different angles. Even though

the angle and shape has technically changed, we still comprehend the original form.

Brightness constancy

is when the brightness of an object (such as a sheet of paper)

remains constant under different light sources, such as in full daylight or at nighttime.

Size constancy

is the idea that an object’s size remains the same even though the size

appears to differ with changes in distance.

There is also a

linear perspective

, which is the idea that lines coincide as they fade into

the distance.

Interposition

is when objects overlap one another and causes the viewer to believe

that one object is further away.
