Leadership Style

Justification for the Style

You were just assigned to lead a team to

quickly finalize the new employee

manual that is due in a week. The

people on your team do not have

Human Resources or writing experience,

but they are motivated to complete this

project due to the fact that the current

manual is so out of date.

You are leading a group of customer

service representatives. Their previous

manager told you that they responded

well when he had contests to reward the

representatives who provided the most

accurate product knowledge and got

the highest customer ratings.

You were chosen to mentor a team of

managers-in-training. Each one has

strengths and weaknesses. With some

individual attention, you are certain that

you can make them exceptional

managers.

You have had the opportunity to work

with this group of team members before,

when you were opening a new store

location. They did a great job and you

trust their ability to select the next

location. They can’t wait to get started.

You have been asked to put together a

new team of real estate agents that

reside throughout the region. These

individuals have never been put on a

team, but the agency believes that they

will perform better if they learn best

practices from you and other successful

agents.

You have been asked to lead a team

that is investigating the uses for a new

pharmaceutical drug. The structured

drug trials are confidential and the team

members are not privy to many details

because of the nature of the study.

Leadership Styles

Review each situation and determine which leadership style (Coaching, Supporting,

Empowering, Directing) would yield the best outcome. There may be more than one style

that is effective, so be sure to justify your selection.
