Managing Conflict

Now that you’ve learned about cultural diversity, you can better understand why

conflict

arises when there’s a breakdown in communication. There are various reasons

for this, and several have already been discussed (e.g., cultural differences, assumptions,

stereotyping and so forth.) Let’s focus on ways to improve your communication

.

Improving Communication

Be more accepting

We usually want others to be accepting of our ideas and thoughts, even when they might

not be clear to the other person. Try to do the same.

Be attentive

Most of us like to think that what we are talking about is important or at least meaningful.

Paying attention to the person speaking “says” that you’re listening.

Listen between the lines

If you pay attention to the nonverbal signals as well as the words, you have a better

opportunity of understanding the full message.
