Body Language and Gestures for Different Cultures

It’s difficult to know about the cultural norms in every group. Trying to follow all the rules is

even more challenging. However, the more rules you know, the more groups you can

effectively interact with. Here are a few examples of cultural differences you may find in

the workplace, at school, or in different countries around the globe!

Eye Contact

In the United States and Canada,

intermittent

eye contact conveys that you are

interested and listening to what the other person is saying. This type of eye contact is

appropriate for males and females in mixed company.

In some European cultures, it is considered completely appropriate to

stare

at individuals

for extended periods of time.

In many Middle Eastern cultures, you can expect

intense

eye contact as a sign of trust

and connection. However, this is only appropriate between individuals of the same

gender. Particularly in Muslim cultures where anything more than

brief

eye contact is

inappropriate with members of the opposite sex.
